Sunday 28th May 2023 – Pentecost
Read: Acts 2:1-21 – Pentecost
The disciples had been doing what Jesus had said -stay in the city and wait. On the day of Pentecost they were all gathered together when something amazing happened. A huge sound like a massive gust of wind came into the room, and what looked like tongues of fire landed on each of their heads. This was the Holy Spirit coming to them. The promise Jesus gave them was coming true – his helper on earth was with them. They were filled with the Holy Spirit and they were able to speak all different languages and tell everyone about Jesus and what he had done. People from all over were living in Jerusalem and most were amazed to be able to understand what these men from Galillee were saying. Some people grumbled and even thought they were drunk! Peter did something amazing though – he stood up and started to explain to everyone what had happened, how Jesus had died and the resurrection. Some people say this was the very first sermon (the big long part in church when the minister talks about the Bible readings). Thousands of people started to believe after hearing Peter, many were baptised and they all joined the Church for worship, fellowship and sharing their lives together.

Where were the disciples when this happened? What happened? What did the Holy Spirit do? What did Peter do? Can the Holy Spirit still help us today?

Pray: Holy Spirit of God, sent to be our guide, you are present in our world today. You are like a dove which brings peace to calm us and peace to our world. You are like fire, which brings warmth, light and power to change us for the better. You are like wind that blows, refreshes us and moves us into new experiences. Holy Spirit of God, bring us peace and help us to share your love with others, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (taken from Praying Together)
Father in heaven watch over our loved ones.
Keep them by your side.
May they be safe and peaceful, in you may they abide.
Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses too we pray,
renew their strength and bless them for the work they do each day. Send healing and restoration and let them feel your love.
May your Holy Spirit give them rest as gentle as a dove. Amen (taken from Praying Together)

Some people think of Pentecost as the church’s birthday – could you bake a cake or some buns to celebrate? Can you share these with some friends, family or neighbours?
