Sunday 16th October 2022 – The Persistent Widow Read: Luke 18:1-8
Today in our story we hear about a widow who was persistent. To be persistent means that you keep going or asking for something even when everyone says no, or you face lots of challenges. The widow in our story asked the judge for justice against her adversary, but the judge refused – the judge did not care about what God thought, or what the people thought. This didn’t stop the widow who went back time and time again to ask the judge. Eventually they judge gave in – he said he would make sure she got justice so she would stop bothering him or attack him.
Jesus was telling his disciples this story to help them think about praying, and how they should never stop praying – if the judge who doesn’t care about God eventually answers the widow’s question can you imagine how more receptive God will be to our prayers. The other thing we need to remember is that God always answers prayers, it just may not be the answer that we want or expect.
