Jesus wanted people to know that following him would not be easy – it would be worth it, but it would not be easy! People needed to be prepared to give everything up to follow him – they needed to put him first in their lives – even if it meant leaving everything behind. The next few verses in the Bible are stories Jesus told to help people realise it wasn’t as simple as saying I will follow Jesus, but people had to think carefully about what they were doing and what they would be giving up – it wouldn’t be easy, but it would be worth it!
