John the Baptist has been teaching and telling people they need to stop their bad behaviour and turn back to God. Many people thought John was the Messiah they had all been waiting for, but John made sure to tell them he was not – in fact someone who was more powerful was coming – John knew he was doing what God has asked him to do. John baptised lots of people, including Jesus. When Jesus had been baptised, the heavens opened, and God said ‘You are my Son and I love you. I am very pleased with you.’ God knew what Jesus was going to do while he was on earth, and his baptism takes place at the very start of his ministry on earth – God was pleased the rescue plan was now in motion!

Where was Jesus baptised? Why did John not want to baptise him? Who did people say Jesus was?

What did the voice from heaven say? Who was speaking from heaven? Why was he pleased?

Read the story of Jesus baptism in Matthew 3:13-17, Mark 1:9-11, John 1:29-34. What story is you favourite? Is there anything that could be left out and still tell us what we need to know? Is there anything that should be added?

Pray: Thank you for sending your son to be our rescuer on earth. Amen.

Father in heaven watch over our loved ones.
Keep them by your side.
May they be safe and peaceful, in you may they abide.
Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses too we pray,
renew their strength and bless them for the work they do each day. Send healing and restoration and let them feel your love.
May your Holy Spirit give them rest as gentle as a dove. Amen (Taken from Praying Together)
