– Jesus Clears the Temple Read: John 2:13-22
The Temple was a very important building and getting to spend time in worship there was really special. There were lots of rules that you had to obey – you couldn’t use normal roman coins – you had to have special currency. People set up a place where you could exchange money, but they turned it into a very profitable business – they were making lots of money and taking advantage of people. There were also people selling animals for sacrifices, again charging far more than what the animals were worth. They had turned the Temple in a marketplace and Jesus was not happy about it. This is one of the few times we hear about Jesus being angry. He chased all the stallholders out of the Temple, he turned over tables and he shouted a lot! The people in charge were not happy and wanted to know why Jesus had done this, but also what miracle Jesus would do to show why he had destroyed the Temple. When Jesus answered he confused everyone – he said if the Temple was destroyed, he could rebuild it in three days! The authorities were amazed – it took forty-six years to build the Temple – how could Jesus rebuild it in three days? They didn’t understand that Jesus was talking about himself, and the fact that he would rise again on the third day.

Are you surprised by how Jesus acted? What made him so angry? How would you have reacted if you were there? Why were the authorities so angry? What did Jesus mean when he talked about rebuilding the Temple in three days?
Do:
Craft – do some coin rubbings – can you find any special coins or foreign currency?

Pray:
God, sometimes we can feel angry, sad, disappointed, and frustrated – just as Jesus did in the Temple. Help us to talk to people who can help us feel better, and to let you know exactly what we are feeling, knowing you will understand. Amen
Father in heaven watch over our loved ones.
Keep them by your side.
May they be safe and peaceful, in you may they abide.
Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses too we pray,
renew their strength and bless them for the work they do each day.
Send healing and restoration and let them feel your love.
May your Holy Spirit give them rest as gentle as a dove. Amen (taken from Praying Together)
Share: Tell someone about a time you were angry and what you did to help you feel better.
