Sunday 8th January 2023 – The Baptism of Jesus Read: Matthew 3:13-17

John the Baptist was given a very special job to do – he had to prepare the way for Jesus. Everything John did pointed towards Jesus. When Jesus came to John to be baptised John was surprised – he thought that he should be baptised by Jesus, not the other way around. When Jesus explained that it had to be done this way to fulfil God’s plan John agreed. As soon as Jesus was baptised the heavens opened and a voice from heaven said ‘This is my son, and I love him, I am very pleased with him.’ God was pleased that Jesus was starting to put his rescue plan into action and wanted everyone else to see how special and important Jesus was.

Watch:

How were John and Jesus related? Why did John not want to baptise Jesus? Why did Jesus want to be baptised? I wonder how John felt when he saw Jesus? What did the voice from heaven say? Who was the voice? I wonder how Jesus felt when he heard the voice?

Pray: Dear God, thank you for Jesus and all that he did for us. Amen

Father in heaven watch over our loved ones.
Keep them by your side.
May they be safe and peaceful, in you may they abide.
Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses too we pray,
renew their strength and bless them for the work they do each day. Send healing and restoration and let them feel your love.
May your Holy Spirit give them rest as gentle as a dove. Amen (Taken from Praying Together)
