ReadActs 2:1-21

Today is a special day in the church – some people say it is the Birthday of the Church! On this day we think about when the Holy Spirit came to the disciples. When Jesus had ascended into heaven, he promised the disciples that God’s helper, the Holy Spirit, would come and be with them. The disciples were scared and worried because of everything that had happened with Jesus. They were all in a large room together when the room filled with wind and what look like tongues of fire landed on their heads. This was the Holy Spirit! The disciples were amazed to discover that they could speak languages from all over the world and understand them! People saw what had happened but didn’t understand and thought that the disciples were drunk. Peter stood up and corrected them – he then went on and told everyone everything that had happened. Thousands of people gave their lives to Jesus and got baptised. Today is called Pentecost and is the 50th day after Easter Sunday.

God sends the Holy Spirit

Where were the disciples when this happened? What happened? What did the Holy Spirit do? What

did Peter do? Can the Holy Spirit still help us today?

Plan an imaginary celebration for Pentecost in your church – what would you do to celebrate?

Pray: Holy Spirit of God, sent to be our guide, you are present in our world today. You are like a dove which brings peace to calm us and peace to our world. You are like fire, which brings warmth, light and power to change us for the better. You are like wind that blows, refreshes us and moves us into new experiences. Holy Spirit of God, bring us peace and help us to share your love with others, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (taken from Praying Together)

Father in heaven watch over our loved ones.
Keep them by your side.
May they be safe and peaceful, in you may they abide.
Give wisdom to the doctors and nurses too we pray,
renew their strength and bless them for the work they do each day. Send healing and restoration and let them feel your love.
May your Holy Spirit give them rest as gentle as a dove. Amen (Taken from Praying Together)

Share – Some people think of Pentecost as the church’s birthday – could you bake a cake or some buns to celebrate? Can you share these with some friends, family, or neighbours?
