I’m certain like me you have never heard of Butere before. Since the project is to do with cows, it is rather apt that the spell checker is always suggesting butter as the correction for Butere.
So Butere is a diocese in Kenya. Over 100 years ago Elizabeth Chadwick and her younger half–brother, Walter, children of a former Bishop of Derry and Raphoe a Bishop George Chadwick helped set up a church and school in Butere. Our Bishop has challenged us as a diocese to provide the funds so that each parish in Butere can have a cow. How does a cow help? It provides milk which can be turned into an income to support the clergy. Calves will also provide another source of funds.
Looking back through the online archive for the Church of Ireland gazette, 100 years ago the adverts show that the church of Ireland rectors of that era were looking for young men who could milk and be familiar with animal husbandry. So rectors having cows is not a new thing!
Please join us for a gospel concert on October 15th in Stranorlar Parish church at 8pm where there will be a retiring collection to fundraise for this project.
Below is a video message shown at the evening of celebration for Opportunity 2016 highlighting the links between our dioceses.
